  • 2013 Antinori Tignanello

Thought this might have been flawed upon opening, even after 90 minute decant, so took to my local wineshop where awesome palates prevail. They said, perhaps imbalanced but nothing really wrong, so took home and double, triple, quadruple decanted for 3 more hours. Took to my blind tasting wine club, where it finished in the top 3 out of 12 super Tuscans!!
Folks these have to be heavily decanted.......even at 11 year old, and will obviously prevail years from now! Enjoy!!

  • 2018 Penley Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Helios Coonawarra

This wine is still capable of cellar rest for a few years which it needs unless you undertake a serious decanting process. Took to our Wine Club blind tasting of southern hemisphere cabernet last night after triple decanting for 3 hours plus and another 3 hours in bottle. It was a totally different wine when tasted, than it was when first opened--the tannins had softened, was much smoother and integrated with savory notes, & textured. It held its own and was among the leaders with wines like Don Melchor, Domus Aurea, VIK Millahue, Penfolds 407, Catena Alta, Hickenbothem Trueman, Penley Tolmer, and Two Hands Sexy Beast. Everyone was surprised at the quality of these wines. Most were from 2012 to 2020. There was very little of the South American green pepper or road tar influence--many would have been guessed blind as having been from North America. Tastings like this really do add perspective to one's wine knowledge journey.

  • 2018 Frank Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Rutherford

Bought this believing it was the 2018 RHF Cabernet, Rutherford--The wine was in Spectator Top 100. The winery told my retailer that the same juice is in both bottlings. Seems odd since the winery has been making the RHF since 2016 and Wine Advocate rated both 2018 wines differently with different tasting notes. Wonder what is going on here??

10/3/2018 12:42:00 PM - papabluez- I would be very interested in your club. Thursdays are hit and miss with me due to my kids activities but I would love to attend those I can. I also attend Wine styles in Coralville quite often for events. How can I get a hold of you for the coffee or beverage??

1/18/2017 - We usually meet every Thursday at Vineria and most of the time we taste blind as en effort to learn. Once per month is reserve night (criteria: 94 minimum professional score and $50 minimum) The last two reserve nights we've had between $600 and 800 worth of great wines on the table to try. However, we are open to a different format and could come south or perhaps somewhere in North Liberty. Let me know what might interest you. There appear to be a fair number of people in the area with extensive fine cellars. I see you are heavily into Cabs. I've tried to diversify, but have kind of specialized in the West Coast Rhone Ranger arena with some of the best, i.e.: Cayuse, Reynvaan, Long Shadows, Booker, Torrin, Law, Keplinger, Horsepower, Carlisle. I am going to have to quit some of those clubs as the cellar is near capacity.

1/17/2017 5:09:00 AM - Good Morning, I would be interested in the wine group. We used to have a pretty active group of 8 to 10 couples. That was probably 10-12 years ago, but many things changed and i haven't sought one out. I travel a fair bit for work, but would be interested. Thanks! b
