9/29/2023 4:13:00 PM - Jim, we're holding a Cab Franc blind tasting on Sat Nov 11th here in Victoria. Wondering if you'd like to participate and bring a CF from your cellar to throw in the mix. Let me know - John

  • KVM says:

8/15/2023 2:47:00 PM - Hi KillerJ, I tasted at Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards in early August/23. The wines were OK. Did not taste the top sparklers and wasn't going to pay the higher prices on spec. Have you tasted them?

  • ChairmanKao says:

7/1/2023 5:57:00 PM - Hey KillerJones (or Jim?), finally heading up to your area later this summer. We may go check out The Vault, but life with a toddler never goes as planned. If I have space for another bottle or two, got any request(s)?

  • ballparks says:

5/25/2023 4:28:00 PM - "Manischewitz and Gefilte Fish". Clearly you cannot appreciate the finer things in life. Try it next time with Matzo Ball Soup and it will be a game changer. The salt and schmaltz offsets the sweetness of the Concord and makes it takes like fine Bordeaux.

5/20/2023 1:59:00 AM - Hi! You ever drunk Riesling from Austria, Wachau? Greetings Reinhard

  • Canoehead says:

2/17/2023 8:54:00 AM - Jim, Vino Loco & I have sent you an email invite for a Carmenere tasting Feb 25 up island. We know it’s not easy making the trek to the island but you’re invited all the same.

  • Canoehead says:

12/11/2022 6:03:00 PM - KJ, I assumed you’d be swamped with exams and precious students so I didn’t extend an invitation to this most recent tasting event. But we do have to get you over here for one of our weekend tastings. Definitely a 2013 Cabernet tasting next year.

  • mwneil says:

10/12/2022 7:08:00 PM - Thanks but where can I find those wines in the US.

  • Canoehead says:

8/6/2022 7:58:00 PM - KJ, Darren and I are looking at hosting a tasting here on the Island on Sat the 27th of August. Would be up for coming over for that?

  • ChairmanKao says:

8/4/2022 11:55:00 AM - Thanks for the awesome recommendations! Will definitely look into those places. Will also reach out to you prior to our next trip to BC and see if we can connect to taste some wines. At the very least, I can bring you a bottle or two from the States (perhaps something that you can't get in BC). I started using CT as an attempt to keep an inventory on what I have, but it hasn't worked out very well since I've only listed about 10-20% of what's in my storage (insert embarrased face). Thought that I can (at the very least) use it as a way to keep track of my tasting notes (fingers crossed).

  • ChairmanKao says:

8/2/2022 11:14:00 PM - Question: Where do you go shopping for wine in Cloverdale? I'm in Southern California, but my in-law families are in your area (Surrey), and I can't find anything good when I'm up there (at least not without spending a lot for a bottle).

  • Canoehead says:

3/30/2022 11:12:00 PM - Hey Jim, hope you’re well. I know it’s exam time coming up but Darren & I are planning a blind tasting Sun Apr 10 that could be a lot of fun. Any chance you got the 11th off @ school and join us on the island?

  • James Kim says:

3/6/2022 6:51:00 AM - Hi Jim, thanks for commenting on my note for the 2010 Barbi brunello. The wine was stood up unopened to settle any sediment, which it turned out was very little. It just happened to be 2 weeks before I could get to the wine. Hope that clarifies things. Best, James

  • axis.gb says:

Merci!

  • James Kim says:

1/16/2022 5:47:00 AM - Hi KillerJones, thank you for the nice comment and memory of the wine. Got the wines from a relatively new venture, Source Material Wine, started by VomBoden and Robert Dentice. Really nice, small producers, mostly from Germany and a bit from Austria. Hope that helps. Best, James

  • Canoehead says:

12/22/2021 4:24:00 PM - Hey KJ, hope you're doing well. Hopefully you got our pics via email from the tasting the previous weekend. Looking forward to having you attend a 2022 bottlefest. I did a tasting story of all the wines. The Collective was the majority's fave! Happy Holidays!

  • I'd Rather Be Drinking Wine says:

9/13/2021 6:26:00 PM - Hello Jim....Love the Bio! My first wine pairing was similar, but it was Cold Duck! Took another 20 years before I realized there were actually some good wines out there! I am likely a slower learner than you! Have spent my life so far trying to make up for lost time!

  • geoffjb says:

8/17/2021 7:12:00 PM - Thanks Jim! Can't wait to share a bottle or two some day.

  • Gustavo Brambila says:

7/4/2021 11:04:00 AM - Thanks for the reply Jim, so sad that I only have one 2014 left.

  • Gustavo Brambila says:

7/3/2021 10:10:00 AM - Hey Killer, I see you had a bottle of 2014 Nota Bene. I have a bottle and I wonder if it's time to drink up? What do you think?

  • Canoehead says:

6/2/2021 5:24:00 PM - Hey KJ - DV and I hope you're doing well. We toasted to you this past Sunday over some delightful Consensus reds from Blind Creek Collective. We hadn't heard from the email asking if you wanted to FaceTime. Hopefully you can make it to the Island in the 2nd half of 2021 and we can share some top bottles!

  • geoffjb says:

3/3/2021 9:29:00 PM - I see some Checkmate has been added to your cellar. Colour me jealous!

  • Neecies says:

    2/1/2021 3:02:00 AM - You got a haircut.

  • WineTonite? says:

12/6/2020 8:41:00 AM - Hi KJ, Your welcome! I find your reviews helpful too :). In response to my tasting about The Nichol P Gris Two Barrels, I’d recommend tasting before you buy with this winery. All their wines - white and red - tend to be high in acidity. Which in the reds, can lead to thin tasting wines. That said, They do a great job with their Pinot Gris (still and bubbles) And we usually Always have a bottle or 2 in the cellar.

  • Gustavo Brambila says:

10/9/2020 6:17:00 PM - Happy you were able to find a deal. Us over tax British Columbian's need to stick together.

8/31/2020 9:54:00 PM - I had a bottle of the 2010 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino the other night, stellar! If the 15's are anything like the 10's and 12's. I may have to burn the Chq book.

  • scorbett says:

7/24/2020 7:02:00 PM - Heyo KillerJones, I know you appreciate the Evelina's Block from Foxtrot. Just wanted to let you know it's likely peaking right now. The 16s have passed... this wine is not built for aging. Source: drank multiple 16s and 17s so far... and my gf may just be working for them so I have access to the winemaker's brain.

  • geoffjb says:

5/19/2020 7:58:00 PM - You know it! Black Hills and Quail's Gate are looking pretty good right now...

  • geoffjb says:

5/19/2020 3:16:00 PM - I had the 2016 Creek the other night and I just don't think it's on par with the 2014 and 2015. I think you were on to something by moving on.

  • geoffjb says:

5/3/2020 2:09:00 PM - I saw this article about Maverick Winery being sold to Andrew Windsor of Tinhorn and thought of you (https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2020/05/second-okanagan-winery-sold-in-two-months/). Have you had any experience with Maverick?

  • Neecies says:

3/27/2020 4:25:00 PM - You asked a question a week ago as I'd been "quiet". I answered, but I answered to my own board I just realized where I should have put it on your message board instead. I'm still learning! Here's my response: 3/19/2020 5:18:00 AM - Thanks for missing me. We went to Los Angeles where we co-host a multi-course wine dinner with another couple every year. Surreal times: dined at two fab restaurants last week, both are now closed. On Mon we bailed on a dinner Tues night held in our honor, cancelled our flight, rented a car large enough to sleep in and bolted out like refugees. Listened to CNN the whole way, everything getting worse by the hour. On Monday we thought it was safe to buy coffee at Starbucks. By Tuesday we only went to convenience stores where we could serve ourselves. With gloves on. Thrilled to be home. Couldn't wait to greet neighbors over the fence. Turns out she has pneumonia and after three unsuccessful rounds of antibiotics, she's being tested for Covid-19. I can't believe how rapidly things are changing. We're now officially in self-quarantine. Fortunately, I have 1900 bottles of wine and 98 rolls of toilet paper. No wait, I changed one yesterday, it's 97 now. How are you doing?

  • YoRi says:

3/23/2020 12:46:00 PM - I read on your profile that your dream wine is a St-Joseph from Monier Perréol. Can you get that wine in BC ? Very limited quantity private import here in Quebec. Read another fan of this wine on CT: philmtl . Cheers

  • Oenecnist says:

3/23/2020 11:22:00 AM - Regarding the NV Aubry, my stash is at least 6 years old; I don't know how we can tell if yours is younger than mine. Our latest slightly chilled bottle did not strike me as grapey and fresh, and I doubt that would have been more prominent if it had been colder. I like the idea of chilling Champagne in the backyard snowbank--common practice with a North Shore "mountainside" backyard? In our neighbo(u)rhood in March, we can chill a bottle on the windowsill (indoors!).

  • Dave Dewar says:

    2/18/2020 9:11:00 PM - Haha yes I love drinking Rob's wine!

  • Francois Le Mouel says:

2/16/2020 1:35:00 PM - Have you had the chance to taste some of the Pather Creek wines? Worth it?

  • Oenecnist says:

2/4/2020 12:53:00 AM - Thank you for your comment on my '98 Ch Fonroque note. I am glad that you find something useful and informative. I have only one correction: my "cellar" is simply my basement organized so that I can sometimes find things. In our region, unlike Vancouver, we can afford to have basements that aren't suites. Sante'!

  • geoffjb says:

2/1/2020 8:03:00 AM - I've enjoyed looking at some of your older tasting notes and the conversations they tend to inspire. Your high praise of the Similkameen Collective Consensus encouraged me to grab 3 of the 5 bottles left at Gull Liquor in North Van. Although I had to have a family member pick them up so I won't be able to try it for a few months, I'm looking forward to it based on your notes. They claim to have two bottles left, if you're interested. Happy February!

  • Oenecnist says:

1/10/2020 12:46:00 PM - Appreciate your interest and your note. My rating system is 4 adjectives with allowance for +/- on each so that's 12 possible ratings. Since I started using it, almost all are "noteworthy" or "drinkable" (with +/-) and, within that, most are some version of "noteworthy". Doing homework steers me from "poor", but I leave it as an option. I'm stingy with "outstanding". Re: comment about Cdn restaurants. It comes from YVR experience (lived there several years some time ago and visit regularly) so I'm guessing about the rest of Canada. Gov store prices are so high that restaurants I visit seem to settle for "double retail-ish" for most of their wine lists (vs triple retail in much of the US). YVR wine list prices are still high by US wine list standards, but they're low relative to local retail when compared to US local pricing. Sometimes I find a BCLDB price that's not too far off my US comparison, and I might find it on a wine list: that get's my attention--that is, "reasonable" retail and only double that on the YVR wine list. The '17 Natte Valleij Cinsault is not at the gov store so I had only the best US retail (from Searcher PRO) for comparison. Hope this helps. P.S. Serious collecting (NOT "trophy" collecting) seems very tough in BC unless you're rich--so much to love there, but it's tough on serious wine aficionados.

12/31/2019 5:49:00 AM - I just saw on youtube (you posted a comment) that you have some Sine Qua Non wines! I love what they do... I was able to buy 3 recently (I'm like a kid in a candy store when I see SNQ wines): Syrah Stockholm 2010, Next of Kyn 2010 and Trouver l'Arène 2015...I'm sooo excited:)

  • winewitch59 says:

12/15/2019 10:31:00 AM - Just to let you know, the bottle exchange didn’t go too badly. I ended up with a 2017 Famille Perrin Les Cornuds Vinsobres. Wiping my brow and going ‘phew!”. BTW: I’m in Ladner. Nice to meet ya neighbour! Janice (winewitch09)

  • Neecies says:

11/19/2019 11:27:00 AM - Nice to meet you! Love your profile; will send it to a Jewish wine friend in a few minutes. I'm sure she can relate!

  • geoffjb says:

10/3/2019 8:37:00 AM - Thanks KJ. I appreciate the comment. I'm still very much a beginner so perhaps what I thought was an absence of alcohol was rather a well-integrated wine (and now that you mention it, I'd think that a 15% wine should have shown *some* alcohol). I'll just have to drink the other bottle sooner than I planned to find out! In any case, thanks again for the message and your great reviews.

6/22/2019 7:33:00 AM - Hi, KJ. Thanks for your comment. How did it work with the turkey? Best, -B

  • Ron Slye says:

6/15/2019 6:55:00 PM - Love the wine story. I love gefilte fish (if it is well made. Never liked Manischewitz

  • KillerJones says:

5/4/2019 5:32:00 PM - BCC is '14 - thought I would compare these Oliver wines that are so close. That year was pretty good for OK valley, no?

  • Francois Le Mouel says:

5/4/2019 5:24:00 PM - What vintage is the BCC?

  • JAP55 says:

4/5/2019 2:26:00 PM - Thanks for the invite KillerJones. I enjoy those reviews of yours I have read so far.

3/9/2018 5:11:00 PM - Were you at Cedar Creek today? ;) I'm a fan, but I must admit, not really jumping at the Last Word for damn near $100.

9/8/2017 8:47:00 PM - Nice to see other BC people on CT. Cheers.
