  • 2018 Bodegas y Viñedos Castro Ventosa Mencía Bierzo El Castro de Valtuille Joven

Had a lot of bright red fruit, like cherry or raspberry. Brightness not from acidity but fruit. Was an easy drinker, a decent choice for the price. Not complex but just okay, and not sure I would try again. The high toned fruit is what I remember most. Maybe that is the way Mencia grape just is. It has 13.5% alcohol and is a Joven, which explains the bright and fresh profile. Odd that I'm neither for or against this wine. Ready now.

Last one. Cork very good, stained deep burgundy. Great bouquet upon opening with two prong remover. Taste does not match bouquet. Reticent. Acid still kicking. Tannins still present but very evolved and fine. Bright and tart. Did not expect this to be this lively. Hard to describe fruit at 19 years. Not prominent but there. Not heavy but pretty. Is it balanced or is acid showing more? I'm thinking needs glass time for fruit to step forward. 13% alcohol is refreshing and is undetectable, say thankee. Drying on the lips when swished in mouth. CT reviewers indicate cigar box, leather, and pencil lead, and there is something there that's hard to pin down but distinct after about ten seconds. Absolutely no bouquet now at 1-1/2 hour. It's as if all the fruit ran away like the dickens with the initial bouquet when opened. But not so, as fruit is now in glass. This is not a bad wine. Its developed and if not for the hiding fruit, could pass for a wine at five years. This is very ready now. Some with pristine storage might consider additional aging. Give it about an hour in the glass, maybe more, and it's ready now.

I had this over two days. Alcohol is 14.1%, which is decent for a California pinot. The intensity of the fruit, especially what I define as the unique Russian River profile, was immediately there. Bouquet present but not strong. Fruit was the star. Dumol and Kosta, while not similar, for me do the best job at showcasing the Russian River pinot. Hard to actually describe it but different from any other California pinot region. Strongest the first day, then sealed cork only, and the sharpness of the fruit stepped back the next but still present. Acidity was decent and very much in balance with the fruit, moreso day two. It was ready each of those days I had it, but might take maybe five more years of aging. Based on my tasting, I would be surprised if after another five years the fruit was in decline. Recommended.
