    Should you be interested, I’ve uploaded info for this vintage which you can peruse at your leisure. 😉

    ≈2 hr slow ox prior to being 1st tasted @ the restaurant, the recorked transit being < 15 min; Private Preserve used after Day 1

    N: Plums, smoke, with a definite mineral component

    P: LM body; Nice, almost swtish frt met by a zesty acidity which takes its time to work itself out as it transitions into a LONG, EVENTUALLY pleasant finish, the wine's firmness being < of an issue with the night's Calzone/Marinara, Eggplant Parmigiana, & Cannelloni (Ricotta/Spinach). On Day 1 the relatives were considerably > entranced with this than I was.

    // Day 2: Closed, but seems to be hiding a richness/depth that I didn't get on Day 1. P now showing a rndish entry with MF body, NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by an astringent pucker which SLOWLY works its way into a LONG, nicely balanced, VERY pleasant, tangy/swt finish. For me, VERY much improved over Day 1™, & while SLIGHTLY better solo, it nicely accompanied tonight's CHX Tagliatelle Alfredo MRE. [™However, the relatives found it 'bout the same as on Day 1.]

    // ∑: Based upon its improvement Day 2, I quite erred in not decanting this VERY attractive wine with significant life still left: guessing through '26? The higher level of my EXC (92,93/100 using that metric), with a tick or maybe even 2 higher IF one takes into account the $35.95 pd for it in Apr '18.

    Note: Also tasted 2/10 & 3/24/18, + 6/21/20

  • 2019 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon

    Should you be interested, I’ve uploaded info for this vintage which you can peruse at your leisure. (Check wine-searcher’s Vendors & Reviews pgs for “pro” input.) 😉

    ≈55 min slow ox; Private Preserve used after Day 1

    N: Coffee, poss tea, then a spice component (pumpkin pie spice?) with notes of blackberries & hints of pyrazines

    P: Med, poss LM, body; NICE, ALMOST swtish frt met by a BIT of astringent pucker which BRIEFLY builds before slowly, fairly seamlessly transitioning into a LONG, balanced finish with a pleasant tangy/SWTNESS (45:55) to the VERY innocuously firming tannins. Clearly better solo than paired with Stuffed Bell Peppers (Costco MRE) in Tom Sauce, which didn't allow the wine's structure to resolve, & is an entrée for which I've yet to find a compatible red wine. 🤔

    // Day 2: ~ aromatics; ~ P flavorwise, though with the firmness being > evident vis-a-vis the decreased frt, I was not pleased as to how it held.

    // Day 3: ~ aromas, though seemingly > potent? P now being LM body, the frt being > evident than on Day 2 😲 , + it showed well with the Grilled Grnd Beef with Cheese & Baked Potatoes. So, for whatever reason, a *markedly* BETTER showing than anticipated given the (apparent) fall off from Day 1 to Day 2!

    // ∑: The low end of my EXC- (90,91/100 using that metric) assuming the wine's Day 2 hiatus wasn't just MY palate 😊 , certainly 91, poss 92, given the QPR of the $12.99 pd. Should drink through '24 easily. 14% ABV

    My 4th taste of this vintage.

  • 2015 Aliane Morgon Côte du Py

    Should you be interested, I’ve uploaded info for this vintage which you can peruse at your leisure. 😉

    ≈2 hr decant into a plastic, cylindrical pitcher which was then capped, some chunky sediment noted; Private Preserve used after Day 1

    N: Muted earth, blkberries, blk rasps, & something floral, but all of these must be teased out

    P: LM body; Minimum frt met by a brief, astringent/PUCKER which slowly transitions into a Long, tangy finish with just enough firmness to cleanse the P. While not at all offensive, neither was there anything to commend it, other than nicely cleansing the P with our Grilled Pk Chops.

    // Day 2: Has lost intensity, though the aromas are ~, probably with > earthiness. While the P *somewhat* works 'cuz of the wine's balance, the min frt of Day 1 has fallen off > than I might have anticipated, the INITIAL sip being OK, but the rest... Plus, NOT a good match for the night's Stuffed Bell Peppers (Costco) with added Tom Soup for a sauce.

    // ∑: The low end of my VG+ (88,89/100 using that metric), & only that IF given < air than I did for this bottle. 13% ABV listed on back, but 12% on the front?!? 🤔

Mike Officer the winemaker produces luscious wines bursting with fruit. Considering the prices of good CA wines, Carlisle is a great value. Cheers!

Which critic’s do you find most reliable/in tune with your own tastes for Italian wines. I seem to be in tune with Agata but find many others, for my palet, out of sync. Of course Cellar Tracker is the most reliable because of the range of views.

My wine education began with Chateauneuf du Pape as a young man, but today I do not buy them at all. And there are many other wines I avoid because of the alcohol. That said, it is a mystery to me how there can be so many great wines, and I'm thinking mostly of Barolo but also Etna and occasionally Tuscany, in which 14% feels like 13.

Personally, I like pyrazines, but I feel like there are underripe ones (which taste like raw green bell pepper) and ripe ones (which taste like eucalyptus). Maybe it's actually just the quantity rather than the quality of the pyrazines, but that's how I perceive things. I actually wonder whether the greenness in central coast pinots comes from whole cluster fermentation (i.e., stems) as opposed to pyrazines, but you could be right. I agree with you about the flaws of grenache (too low acidity, too low tannins, too alcoholic). But I overlook these flaws because I love the super-complex, thick flavors of good CdP. I can't say the same for Priorat.

We stayed in the Valle de Uco and found the wines from the higher elevations (Tupangato, etc.) to have more style, acidity and complexity than those from the vineyards closer to Mendoza.     1/8/2021 6:14:00 PM - Sorry for the delay and thanks for your kind words regarding my TN on the Cogno Via Nouva. I do not remember what I drank this with. I drank it over a couple nights mostly to study this bottling. It's Valter's entry level bottling. I had not had it since release, and I was seeing if it was starting to drink yet. The first bottle to be opened of a case purchase. Even this bottle needs time, and his '13 Ravera, V. Elena and Bricco Pernice will need much more time (at least for my palate preference). Re pairing For Barolo: I enjoy savory mushroom dishes, braised meats, of course tartufi when I can. Grilled octopus is a seafood that goes well with Barolo. Roasted game bird and pork also go well. One of my favorites is a simple tagliolini and porcini dish. Hope that helps and thanks for reading.

Also, while I seem readily to sense pyrazines, they're virtually NEVER *too* much for me, although I know plenty of tasters who want nothing WHATSOEVER to do with them. :(

    3/6/2020 8:11:00 PM - Shaw & Smith, the makers of the M3 are one of the better if perhaps lesser Aussie winemakers. Their Adelaide Hills shiraz is also very good (e.g. Lenswood), but their pinot and chardonnay from Tasmania under the Tolpuddle label are both outstanding. Worth searching out.

I usually like a bit of pyrazines, but these wines really taste green and so I thought of you. What is interesting is if I read the tasting notes there are a few mentions of it, but to me it is overwhelming, so I must share your sensitivity to it.

My lady friend is flying to California tomorrow for wedding, but when she gets back, we will return to the restaurant, and I will study the wine list in more depth. A long time ago, I was a submariner stationed out of Pearl Harbor, and the base's exchange had shelf after shelf of old, dusty bottles at unbelievable prices. Chambertin and Chateau Latour for $5 a bottle! I think Chateau Talbot was $3. And these were 1959s and 1961s! Oh, those were the days!

Interesting fact, there is about 3 orders of magnitude in ability to smell green bell pepper (GBP) in the general population according to one study I read. This is one reason people will never agree on what good wine is. I also think I am reasonably sensitive to GBP which is why I don't like many 2011 Napa cabs. Having said that I do enjoy it if it is in the background.

It takes time to get used to your structure and abbreviations (maybe you could add some of your lingo as a glossary on your Profile :), but helpful. Also, give Grenache another try. I've actually zigged (or zagged) *towards* Grenache-driven (and 100% Grenache) CdPs recently - it's still not a wine I'm drinking regularly, but then the balance is there, it's interesting. But... I'm actually not talking about giving CdP-ish Grenaches another try, but instead asking about the ones being produced with bright red fruits and spice. I've found some domestically and also French that are great for the table and priced right. (Here's one I stumbled upon not long ago.     1/17/2018 8:34:00 PM - Delayed reply to food pairings for the Castalia pinot noir (2007): I find the best pairing for this wine to be duck cassoulet (which I make with pork sausage with fennel seeds and a slow-roasted duck, not confit) followed by a roast herbal chicken (with thyme, rosemary and sage). These dishes — and especially the duck -bring out the flavors in the wine - red fruit, forest floor, herbs. A grilled salmon does nothing for this wine, to me. I would think a nice roast rack of lambs with herbs would also work well. The Rochiolli pn proper has similar pairing characteristics. We bought 8 bottles of the Castalia 2007 & 2008 so we have been able to experiment.

As much as I love 90 and above point bottles, I get a lot of pleasure from $20 bottles I score in the high 80s and pair well with food. In regard to the Artemis: too bad your fellow tasters didn't know what they were drinking.
