I hold Caymus in the highest esteem. As much as I love the Special Selection, it’s the ‘regular’ Caymus that I love because it’s kinda sorta reachable for us ordinary folks. That said, this vintage is a huge disappointment. This could be any unbalanced $18 California one dimensional fruit bomb. Having saved this for Christmas as I have done with previous vintages, very disappointing.

Damn! I just experienced a perfect pairing that was totally serendipitous. Was making chicken under a brick for dinner and asked my son to pick a Pinot noir from the cellar—any Pinot noir. He picked the 2014 ABC Aubaine. While I generally love anything Clendenen, I had no experience with this wine, and with no tasting notes or pro reviews, the only thing I knew going in was that it seemed to be right in its window.
Wow! The nose—raspberry, mocha, leather, Dr. Pepper and so much more. The palate brings bing cherry, strawberry, cinnamon, mint (weird, right?), smoked orange peel, and who knows what else. But OMG, here’s the kicker. THE ACIDITY was AMAZING! Talk about a wine that had a nose and a mouthful of fruit and then, BAM, a zip on the back end. This is a winner, and FML I only had one in my cellar.
BTW, my son is 10 and picks wine based on whatever appeals to the eyes of a 10 year old.
