  • 2009 Bodegas y Viñedos Alión Ribera del Duero

1 hour's air in the glass. Darker and more intense nose than I remember from a few months ago - leather, coffee and truffle. Rich, fleshy blueberry and damson palate. Slightly sweet. Warmth from alcohol. Long finish. A really great vintage for this wine. Drinking well now but will improve and last the decade.

2 hour decant. From memory. Beautiful, and beautifully made wine: powerful, cedar and blackcurrant driven nose. Palate rich but dry, intense, dark - incredible concentration for the vintage - leather and forest as well as iron / mineral element. Balance was remarkable - everything exactly as it should be. We tried the 04 Lalande alongside - a success for the vintage too - but, even allowing for the different style, it didn't come close. I am scoring even though it seems pointless: playing in a different league. As great a wine experience as I have had.

  • 1999 Penfolds Grange

2 hour decant. Rich. Exotic. Remarkable concentration. Fruit driven - blue and blackberries - although secondary leathery elements too. Prominent oak but the wine is not dry at all and the wine manages and suits it. Blind I might have guessed very high end Spanish. No way this tastes like a 16 year old bottle that has been stored in a natural cellar. So young and alive.
