  • 2013 Petaluma Riesling Hanlin Hill

Put a few of these in my cellar since release, just opened. Remarkably and disappointing advanced, well past use-by, very consistent with previous note. Colour is a pale orange-brown. Bouquet of oxidised decay mixed with brown lime marmalade. Palate flavour still contains fruit on the front-mid palate but the back palate is thin. Unpleasant. 2013 was a warmer vintage but other SA rieslings of the same have not been so prone to decay.

  • 2009 Tahbilk Cabernet Sauvignon

Medium-dark ruby with some garnet, pale rim, some initial slight browning signs of development. Lovely bouquet of liquor cherries, musk, just-ripe blackberry and cassis, slight spice. Palate consistent, lovely fruit-driven characters, still juicy but with initial secondary savoury characters proving complexity, fine tannins proving slight pleasant grip. Medium finish, medium alcohol (turns out to be 13.5%). Delicious, perfect drinking now and for next few years. 94/100.

  • 2014 Pierro Chardonnay Margaret River

Pale gold, glistening, with a hint of green. Bouquet prominent with sweet citrus, nectarine, a hint of just-ripe pineapple (courtesy of the lovely tart sweetness), slight hints of butterscotch and vanilla. Palate is fresh with a good balance of richness and elegance, flavours consistent with bouquet and adding a touch of slatey minerality. Long finish. Not especially complex but very good drinking in 2019, would be interested to see this in years to come.
