Tasted with Dow Port 1985. Both ports were decanted about 60 minutes prior to tasting. Both ports exhibited lovely nose of black fruit and had generally attained a smooth integration of alcohol and tannin. However, the Cockburn was darker in hue, showed more dense fruit, carried a richer structure on the palate and ended with soft tannins on a longer finish. While both ports are drinking well now, the Cockburn has more stuffing. Rating: Dow 88, Cockburn 91.

On initial pour, the nose was vibrant and red cherry. The taste was off putting. The wine was disjoint with a lot of tannin- acidity with oaky undertone. Over time, it become better integrated with strong mid palate red fruit, leather and cocoa with heat and tannin on the finish. All in all, a good but not great wine.
