  • 2020 Envinate Palo Blanco

I was on the oxidative-and-not-good-train for the first two days. I was thinking about oxidation, over-sulphurisation and wine-errors and had some other bottles in the meanwhile leaving the Palo Blanco half empty in the fridge. Surprisingly this began to show better and better on day three after another 30 Minutes in the caraffe. I admit, this wine is unique, very special and therefore polarising. Quince, bruised apple and pear, some sponti, white and black pepper, smoke and minerals. Slow legs, proper extract at only 11,5%. Very dry and ascetic on the palate, tight tannic structure, wine of unique character, long spicy, smoky and mineral finish. On day three (!), again, so be patient! What this wine definitely isn´t: fruity, shining, hedonistic, crystalline, creamy, elegant... :)

  • 2017 Dönnhoff Hermannshöhle Riesling Großes Gewächs

Excellent concentration, tension and minerality - power without weight! Needed so much air, on day three it slowly started to show its outstanding qualities. Green, yellow and orange fruit spectrum, still showing the typical young stage Riesling reduction of celery and fennel, but already lots of smoke and minerals. Very, very long! Still a baby... 94-96+ potential

  • 2015 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs

Excellent showing. Still very youthful and juicy with noticeable residual sugar, smooth, fine extract with creamy aspects and softened edges - but with great precision in the very long mineral finish. Deep and complex - but accessible and hedonistic with lots of exotic fruit. Personally i prefer for most occasions Dönnhoff and Emrich-Schönleber for the drier Nahe-style. But if you know what to expect from Tim Fröhlichs top site, you will have to admit that this is one of the top Rieslings of Germany. 94++
