  • 1999 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve

Popped and poured, deep ruby hue. Pronounced aromas of cigar box, cassis, plummy fruits, smoked herbs and a touch of roasted red bell pepper. Has a certain elegance in mouth...not light per se yet lithe nonetheless. Black fruits, black currant, tobacco plus a huge impression of crushed stones and minerals in the palate. Drying, chewy tannins on the lengthy close. Reminiscent of a classed-growth Graves and while drinking splendidly right now this has the structure to age effortlessly for years, if not decades.
Beautiful Cabernet, a testament to Tim Mondavi.

Quick comment: I'd opt for drinking this in the near term while the fruit is still in sync with the tannins.

  • 2012 Comptche Ridge Vineyards Pinot Noir

Popped and poured, deep yet bright garnet/ruby. Refined, subtlety complex aromas of cherry fruits, florals, soapstone, anise, thai basil underpinned by continually evolving herbaceous notes (forest floor and conifer?). Unfurls beautifully with air. Medium to medium-plus body. As with the nose, immediate cherry fruits on the palate, which are complimented by flavors of spice and an underlying impression of minerals. Refined, somewhat chalky tannins and a touch of heat on the moderate close. A real beaut.
While this will only improve over the next 3-5+ years it's certainly worth opening right now, just be sure to splash decant for 30-45 minutes.

  • 2001 Duckhorn Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Grown Monitor Ledge Vineyard

Popped and poured, aerated in bottle for about 2 hours. Dark ruby hue, youthful. Expressive nose of blackberry, black cherry, cedar shavings, autumnal foliage, menthol and a bit of coconut/brown sugar from oak. With additional air the oak recedes and the cedar becomes more pronounced. Medium-plus body. Huge flavors of black fruits, black currant and an impression of pronounced cedar & mint. Chewy tannins on the plus close. A "wow" Cabernet made in more of a throwback style, drink now through 2021+.
