  • 2008 Rhys Alesia Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast

Popped and poured, medium dark ruby. Moderate aromas of cherry fruits, raspberries, forest floor, subtle spice, subtle fresh herbs and an impression of minerals. Medium body, balanced acidity. Mirroring the nose, the palate again shows cherry fruits accented by subtle spice and a touch of the herbaceous. While mostly resolved, there's a refined chalkiness of tannins on the deceptively lingering finish which closes with a mild sweetness of fruit. Seems to have entered a decent spot for drinking, best now and over the next 3-5 years.

Quick comment: Interesting how completely similar my notes on this bottle show to my last from 2011. It seems like the main difference is the touch of smoke I had perceived back then has either resolved or disappeared.

  • 2000 Vino Bambino Pinot Noir

Popped and poured, burnt orange rim with a ruby/garnet core. Powerful, sauvage nose initially shows a whiff of sulfur which quickly blows off to reveal complexities of skunky raspberry, underripe strawberry, sous bois, five spice and fresh jalapeno with a hint of smoke. Florals and a pronounced impression of minerals emerge with air...almost Volnay-esque, just a fascinatingly enjoyable aromatic profile.
Medium body, electrifying acidity. Although there's certainly a cherry-fruit element to the flavor profile along with an impression of blood orange from acid, it's immediately apparent the fruit is receding into a tertiary expression of assorted dried herbs, tea leaves, spice and earth while veering into briny/umami with additional aeration. The tannins still show a chalky bite on the lengthy close.
This is utterly fantastic, an acid lovers dream. Drink now or hold for a few more years if you prefer even more tertiary expression.

  • 2008 Keating Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard

Popped and poured, medium-plus dark purple/ruby. Expressive nose just starting to turn tertiary, aromas of black raspberries, ripe currant, cigar box, vanilla bean, old bay seasoning, clay and dried herbs. Notes of menthol and an impression of minerals appears as this continues to open. Medium to medium-plus body. Really shows the best of Napa Cab flavors, with black cherry fruits leading into prominent notes of mint and cedar while being underpinned by excellent acidity. Somewhat astringent tannins keep the flavors lingering throughout.
Clearly this will age for many more years...but wow, it's just delicious right now.
