  • 2000 Umberto Fiore Barolo

Decanted 3 hours prior to drinking.
It took several hours for the nose to come around, and then it opened into wonderful caramel, roses, dried cherries, leathery notes. A beautiful nose.
Quite delicious with dried cherries and caramel. The tannins were seemless although the acidity was a touch too high. Very long finish.
Interestingly enough, this was only 10 years old, but it smelled and tasted like a 25+ year old Barolo. A well aged and delicious 25 year old Barolo. Clearly not made to be aged. To the one other person on CT that has a bottle of this, I would drink it soon, and remember to decant.

  • 2005 Penley Estate Shiraz Hyland

A nose of peppery, black plummy fruits.
Big and smooth, but light on its feet. Surprising balance. The tannins are firm, but soft. A dash of acidity keeps the fruit from being jammy. The fruit is dark and brooding with a pleasant vein of black pepper running through. A long, long spicy finish.
Was pleasantly surprised at how drinkable and enjoyable this wine was.

  • 2004 Ehlers Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

A nose of dark, stewed, plummy fruits with a dash of baking spice and herbal tea.
Very smooth on the palate. Tannins are well integrated right of the pull of the cork. An herbal note to the mulberry and black plum flavors. Touch of black olive and spice. Long finish that turns a touch bitter.
Seems to be at its peak now. A reminder to drink up what I have left. Probably won't get much better.
