Surprisingly complex bottle of wine. This wine takes the body and structure of the cab and does great things with it, provides the fantastic aromatics and palate pleasing aspects of merlot and finishes it with the acidity and structure of the cab franc.

This was a garagiste pick for 10 bucks. I only went long 4 and am kicking myself now. This should have been a case purchase. I need to start trusting Jon more - and this is okay as I've only now started to go through the stuff I've bought from him.

As an everyday wine or a wine where someone wants something crowd pleasing for a wedding or corporate party - this is a deal and a winner.

The nose shows complex notes of cedar tobacco and some black fruits with a touch of oak.
Palate is stable, balance and shows good integration of the tannins. Plum and currant are here as well with some minor red fruit thrown in the back.
Finish isn't as long as I'd like - but then again, it's fantastic for a 10 buck wine.

I'll give Jon credit - he's right- this is a hidden gem in the Southcorp lineup.

Out of the bottle the wine has fantastic aromatics: dominated by black fruit and some cedar. No oak, imho, and some hint of cassis. Taste was quite nice for a rough year in Napa - but for 10 bucks on close out I gave it a whirl. Wine has a touch of a green streak. I'm super sensitive to this so don't take it as screaming green pepper or anything like that. Solid wine, perfect with leftovers and was a great deal for what I paid

Or at least I think it was a reserve (if they made one)

    Anyway.....Dinner w/ the Doolins.

When I first joined this board I kept seeing people post how a wine had entered it's prime drinking stage. Up until about 3 years ago I never really drank anything but 'new' wine.

And, because I've spent more money on current releases for tomorrow's consumption (if they last that long) my exposure to wines with any age on them is limited.

However - I had this wine and opened it at 3PM, poured off to remove the sediment, rebottled and dropped it into my fridge. Dinner was at roughly 630 and was strip steaks and rosemary yukon gold mashed potatoes.

Initial decant the wine opened up with massive raspberry aromatics with some damp undergrowth, mushrooms and just a hint of oak.

The decant time was pretty much perfect. The wine was open showing off sweet tannins, sweet fruit upfront that were not overly sweet, good mid palate complexities and a very lingering finish.

Brian and I both claimed this wine to be very Bordeaux-like and is continued evidence that Californian wines can, and do, age - and age well.

this bottle was a gift from my brother, so the $$ isn't known. but Brian did a quick search on the web and this wine can be had from 40 to 115 nationwide. Personally, right now, having 12 of these at 40 bucks would be a much better use of my money than 90% of the stuff that I've bought recently.

    I really enjoyed this wine.
