Locale: Calabasas, California, USA
Favorite region: Napa, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Piedmont, Tuscany and Portugal
Dream wine: 1945 Chateau Petrus tied with a 1948 Fonseca
Beyond my family and former Miss Illinois wife, I have three passions in life in no particular order: baseball, music and wine. It was a 1978 Duckhorn Merlot I had in 1987 that lit the fiire. I had never had good wine before and decided to try to drink exclusively good wine from that day forward. It has certainly made my career in broadcasting a whole lot more fun. I have three kids from 12 to 25, F, M, F, own and host my own syndicated radio show and have a 1,000 bottle cellar. I collect three ways. I find inexpensive, everyday wines that taste much better than their price, select mid-range wines which I cellar and allow to mature into something of far greater value than their original worth and also save some room for the world's greatest vintners and varietals regardless of price. That's the smallest part of the cellar, lol. I realize my good fortune (every single day) and try to share my vinophile leanings and learnings with as many friends and associates as possible. C'mon over, we'll raid the cellar together!

  • 2006 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

$20 for this upon release? No prob. It's $40 now and I sure would't pay that. On the nose; currant, dark cherries and anise, Bordeaux-like minerals on the palate with blackberry, tobacco, leather and ripe tannins. Nice purple color. Great QPR after a little patience. Time now to enjoy the remainder of a case over the next two years. Nice value and it slides in right at 90 points. Cheers!

  • 2005 Altamura Cabernet Sauvignon

I'm so glad I cellared this for a few years as it's currently drinking as well as I ever expect it too. Red currant, tobacco, leather, ripe blueberries and blackberries on the nose follow to the pallet with lead pencil, forest floor and a tonic-like mineral quality featuring loads of tangy, rich fruit upfront without being cloying or over the top......the definition of a fine Bordeaux-like Napa Cab. The tannins are at a near perfect stage allowing a bright fruit attack on the front pallet and a firm backbone both mid and rear sporting a lovely 30-40 sec. finish. I can't imagine this improving much more. 95 is a high score for me, but this warrants it. Great QPR now rewarding the patient. Cheers!

  • 2009 Cold Heaven Viognier

Being a fan of Cold Heaven has taught me one can go a couple of extra years further than suggested and be rewarded. Gardenia, citrus blossoms and wet stone create a delicious floral scent while lychee, minerals, pineapple and quince dance on the pallet. Grapefruit too? A bit of heat upfront quickly subsides and reveals a wine which pairs with a surprisingly wide array of foods. It has taken on a cheerful golden hue and was lovely on the veranda with an arugula/beet/goat cheese salad and assortment of cheeses. Crisp and very alive. Nice, with a ridiculous QPR.
