I think this one is past its prime while still being very drinkable. I'm sure this was drinking better about 5 years ago. Still has some stuffing though. Moderate tannins with tar and pure Grenache coming through making for a moderately long finish. A good example of the vintage....although somewhat subdued from what I was expecting.

It has been 10 years since I last opened one of these. My note back then stated that this is not a fruit bomb nor was it an elegant French Bordeaux. So what is it now? It is a mellowed version of what it was 10 years ago. This bottle follows a 2006 caymus and it showed somewhat comparable. Still had fruit but more integrated. Still retained some of the tannins but not as much power. In short, it is more in the mainstream and hitting its stride,,,for many much easier to pair with food. I think it is great. I think it can go a few more years and still be good but no reason to wait.

When you buy Caymus you are buying fruit not power. This wine delivers and gives you what is expected but not without losing at least a Benjamin! I think, some of the tannins have left this bottle but makes the fruit standout even more at this age. I like it very much for what it is...but I would drink up now.

3/19/2014 12:10:00 PM - I've been buying some Château Haut-Bages Libéral vintages at Total Wine recently. The 2000 was good, the 2005 is outstanding and I have a 2009 we need to drink. See my notes on the wines. They're running $50-$55.
