Medium intensity of yellow colour with a golden hue. Initially showing a rather restrained nose with aromas of apricot, almond, licorice, honey, dried herbs and white flower. Intensity continues to increase with more aeration and aroma of mineral becomes more pronounced. Full bodied and intense in palate with flavours of honey, licorice and lemon. Very long length with honey lemon peel aftertaste. A very interesting wine that kept me guessing how different grapes (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Ribolla Gialla, Malvasia Istriana and Picolit) contribute to the aromas, flavours and palate of this wine. __________________ Blog: http://www.vinzealot.com Store: http://www.regiswine.com.hk
Tthis wine is picked as the best Carmenere in Sommelier Journal May 2010 issue. It is described as "this sexy, hugely extracted Csrmenere of enormous structure had it all: terrior-driven and earth-scented, with rich, ripe tannins and meaty notes balanced by fresh blueberry, almond extract, and chocolate spice". It has opaque purple colour with a pronounced nose of spices, licorice, chocolate, blueberry, blackberry and vanilla flavours. It has sweet and very fine tannins resulting in a very smooth palate. The wine is definitely a wine with new world style having very concentrated flavour and very fruit-forward. It has very good complexity and structure. Definitely a very good new world wine. I will probably buy a few more bottles and cellar them to see how this wine will evolve.
Vergelegen is one of the most reputable producer in South Africa and received very positive comments from different wine critics.
This bottle has quite a strong nose of citrus, tropical fruit, vanilla and diary flavours. In palate, the wine is very full bodied and has dominant flavour of creaminess and diary flavours. However, it is lacking primary fruit flavour and I think malolactic fermentation is a bit overdone. The wine also lacks acidity and feeling quite alcoholic. Personally, this is not my favorite style of Chardonnay.
