  • 1970 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

My last bottle acquired in the mid 1970’s early in my wine merchant career.

    Decanted 10 minutes before service.
Wonderful Beaucastel which was a touch lighter than subsequent vintages but also lacked the leather/sweat characteristics more commonly found. A very elegant and graceful wine for a Rhône and it only suffered as it was served alongside an excellent 1990 ROBERT Chevillon Premiere Cru Nuits.
In the glass it was holding up without decline more than an hour later.

  • 1981 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Classic leather & sweat initial nose of Beaucastel that developed into a refined lovely Rhone bouquet that is hard to describe in standard red wine terms.Took about an hour of airing to bring it to its best.
Solid acids in background have held fruit over the years and no signs of over-ripeness mar the palate experience. Long finish is elegant and medium weight. Very well balanced.
Bottle was part of a wedding gift from the Perins while at Beaucastel.

  • 1975 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon

One of the greatest Cabs of the decade in my experience. While many of this vintage were a bit light and thin s few such as Caymus and come of the Phelps were my favorites for long term aging. This $7 Cabernet at 41 years old was amazing. Tobacco and cab fruit overlay a firm core of fruit, tannin and the necessary acidity to allow this to develop into an impressive wine. Seductive nose that kept changing and inviting you back for more. On the palate the flavor was complex long and assertive. In the glass the nose and palate continued to develop for about an hour in big Riedel glasses before they started to fade. About 15 minutes decanting before serving.
