  • 2013 Groundwork Pinot Noir Gold Coast Vineyard

pnp, consumed 75/25 over two days. full disclosure: i'm not a pinot person. the only pinot i've ever enjoyed has been kosta browne, which makes sense because i like my wines large and in charge. while the nose on this pinot gave what i've come to expect from pinot (attic funk, earthy red berry aromas, stemmy spice), the palate had a nice fruit pop and the finish was very good. a little caramel to complement the subtley spicy red fruits. light-bodied, but balanced and attention-holding. i'd definitely buy this again, though at its price i'm more apt to stick with what i like. if scoring, 89-90. should drink well for the next few years.

4 hour decant, consumed over 4 hours. gorgeous nose of sweet cassis, some red currant, a little warm vanilla, and blackberry. big voluptuous aromatics suggest a massive wine. but there is an amazingly deft balance here. such silky, elegant textures. a finish that gently rolls around and unfolds, all about plush dark fruits that the nose suggested. this was fantastic, I'm not sure for my palate I see the value, but probably would if I was more into Bordeaux blends. if scoring, 95-96. lots of life left, but drinking nicely for those who prefer primaries.

  • 2013 Groundwork Counoise

unscrew and pour, consumed 50/50 over two days. on the lighter side of typical reds we enjoy. lots and brambly spice, and some earthy red fruits. i really liked it for how off-the-beaten path it is for us. tough to mistake this for anything other than new world, but i did get some old world character in there. if scoring, 86-88. would probably go well with some lighter-fare chicken dishes in the summer. might evolve nicely for the next 2-3 years.
