  • 1982 Château Beychevelle

I am being generous with my rating as 82 is one of my all time favorite vintages and the Beychevelle puts on a good show. Cork fully soaked, some sediments so decanting is advised. Ruby color with bricking within the body of the wine. Took at least an hour to open up on the nose from its rather austere stance, starting with earth, leather, wet tobacco, and then the cassis, spices and black currants emerging with more aeration. On the palate the wine tingles on entry, typical of this amazing vintage, decent acidity and layers of cassis, currants, black fruits intermingled with spice and bitter coffee. Medium to full bodied, the wine finishes long with tannins fully resolved. Some bottles have remained consistent after two hours or more in the decanter, others have had the fruit and tannins dissipate so I would not wait too long to enjoy this very hedonistic wine.

  • 2002 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon

Excellent bottle, this DP has evolved since my last tasting two years ago. Golden green, lots of vibrant bubbles, very mineral and fresh nose of honeyed green apples, wet stones and brioche. Excellent weight and richness on the palate, developing a bit of complexity but still a few years from maturing.

  • 1990 Les Forts de Latour

Pristine bottle, cork intact, fully soaked and fragrant as a mature super second left bank bordeaux. Decanted and aerated for two hours then drank over another two hours. Not a hint of decline in this wonderful wine now at its plateau of maturity. Some bricking in the deep ruby color, excellent nose of cassis, leather, wet earth, graphite, black currants, pipe tobacco. On the palate wonderfully balanced, some complexity mid palate, very good acidity and backbone to the wine, gained weight while in decanter, medium to full bodied, coats the palate and a glycerin like finish with fully resolved tannins. Excellent wine, as good as any super second Pauillac.

8/31/2013 12:42:00 PM - Greetings, The Player. I think your tasting note on the 2002 Giuseppe Quintarelli Rosso del Bepi Veneto IG is perfect - and we must have had virtually the exact same bottle of wine. Cheers, Doug
