Popped and poured. Was excited to try the Scharzhofberger after having the profound '05 Oberemmeler Hutte Kabinett from the same producer. The Scharzhofberger is pale gold in color. The nose, while subtle at first, slowly comes alive with tropical fruits and an ever so slight note of burnt petrol. The wine is somewhat of a bruiser on the palate with an overdose of sweetness that seems to develop a refreshing acidity with some air. There is a noticeable change in body after an hour or so of being opened. Initial expressiveness gives way to a more delicate mouthfeel, yet the sugar continues to dominate. Not as enchanting as the Oberemmeler Hutte but still a fine Kabinett.

Color was a darkish, cloudy plum in the center, lightening up considerably towards the edge of the glass. Nose of mushrooms, spice, and even peppermint. On the palate, sweet tannins blend remarkably well with flavors of mushroom and peppermint spice. Nothing outstanding, but surprisingly fresh given its age and unknown storage history. While I cannot imagine this improving with more age, it probably has a fair amount of life still left in it.

From .375. Popped and poured. This is an enormous wine. The minerally nose jumps from the glass with gobs of dark fruit. Whether or not this is your style of wine, one cannot help but be impressed by its richness and layers of flavor.
