1953 Dinner: Milestone Birthday (Gemma Fish + Oyster): I took just a small bit of this because it was a big evening and I was so enjoying the 53’s that I didn’t want to put off my palate at all. It’s nice and lovely and d’yquem and really what more is there to say. A bit of a bigger version of the wine with more power but still very tasty.

Tasted at the château. Lots of alcohol and tons of acetone made this sharp on the nose. Lots of raisins on the nose, a little exotic, with some medjool dates, and this was actually more aged mandarin peel than the classic marmalade thanks to a bit of smokiness. Lots of depth on the palate, and the bitterness was there, but this was not viscous by any means.

[Good fill, cork was soaked all the way through] Very atypical Yquem nose, rum raisins, dark brown sugar and molasses, toffee, coffee aromas, nuttiness, and cocoa/dark chocolate. Pronounced palate of coffee and espresso, creme brulee, burnt sugar, bittersweet chocolate, affogato, walnut crumble, vanilla and baking spices. Holding a surprising amount of acid, the perception of sugar was the least out of all the Yquem's I have had. Finish was long, but not as long as the best Yquems. Felt a little out of balance with its acidity and bitter notes, with fruit not really ever showing and sugar out of balance. However, the coffee/bitter notes went absurdly well with Tiramisu!

A superb birthday dinner (Amsterdam): A golden colour with a bit brown rim, wax, noticeable bitters, cinnamon, a solid acidity, good midtaste, a bit severe, and a compensating long aftertaste.
