Community Tasting Notes (3) Avg Score: 89 points

  • I noted rather short length and angular tannins on a bottle 3 years ago but was bothered by neither this evening. The tannins were firm but have become more civilised and the length seemed decent. The bouquet was attractive but a bit subdued showing lovely notes of rose, anise tinged herbs and tar with hints of cherry. The palate was medium/full showing more fruit than often in 20 year Barolo, lively acidity, plentiful minerals and similar aromatics to the nose with a firmly supported finish. Good+.

  • Nose shows some rose and berry elements but the palate is coarsely tannic, stewy, bruised fruit without much body to support anything. This struck me as really terrible but I think the silky sleekness of the Giacosa bottlings earlier tonight emphasized the weakness of this wine. That said, I'd be pretty disappointed to cellar this for 15 years and be rewarded as such.

  • Barolo '90-'95: Sexy, feminine nose; violets, lilac. Perfumy rose chocolate, dark fruits. Beautiful nose that really carried the wine.
