  • Drinking beautifully with decanting and airtime.

  • Wow. This wine is drinking great. We decanted and let breathe for about four to five hours. At that point the wine was fully open and just beautifully layered, from the big fruit that this wine obviously was a few years ago we now get some crushed rock standing up with complex spices and some forest floor just (barely) developing. This wine was beautiful as a young woman but is evolving into a much more interesting middle thirties. Graceful and balanced with character poking through even what one might expect of Howell Mountain.

I think this wine will develop beautifully and I am looking forward to tasting throughnmy half case over the next decade. Wait another year or two before popping another.

  • Nose of loamy soil. Raspberry and licorice on the palate. Medium body.

  • One of 16 Howell Mtn Vintners at the Fort Worth Club on 11/8/12 with the HMGA, sampling AVA wines. This one had been open, bottle decanting for a while. This is a true Bordeaux blend, and a lovely complex wine. On the pour was a very deep red with some brown hues. The nose was certainly more old world than any of the others there at the event, but this was very appreciated. The nose, however, was still very consistent with a blueberry, blackberry, vanilla nose that is almost characteristic of Howell Mtn wine. On the entry was blackberry, leather, and cinnamon spice. The middle toned down a bit, showing more of a softer earth. That true grit and tannin didn't take over until the finish, which was when the black pepper started to trickle in. This wine finished with some rather firm tannins, showing that this wine is still very young. I was honestly very surprised by the soft velvet in the front and middle.

  • Lovely richer and more ageworthy than the 2007, lost 40% of the crop due to weather, big, bold, easy to drink, lovely but $120 is a tough sell to me.
