My birthday week is the perfect opportunity (or excuse?) to decant (one hour) another bottle. Black color lurks in the dusky purple robe. With swirling, a vibrant and complex nose emerges of black fruits, anise, rosemary, sage, pepper, coffee beans, dark chocolate and just a hint of funk. Broad and full-bodied, the wine coats the mouth with glycerin viscosity. The concentrated ripe fruit, coffee and olive flavors are huge, almost decadent, and are enlivened by juicy uplifting acidity. The long-lasting finish is rich and creamy and laced with plums, herbs, cocoa and minerals and the sweet, big tannins scarcely call attention to themselves. How can something this powerful be so seamless, effortless and balanced? This very young wine will surely get better with time. Still, even in its infancy it inspires awe. Happy birthday to me. 100 points. (And I still want 10 cases just for me!)
Although very enjoyable, I didn't find this bottle close to the 100 pt quality many described here. I didn't find much words about the nose here despite many praises. One note says the nose is shy, and I agree with that. The nose reveals more hay than anything. And it's kind of muted other than that. We decanted and drank it along the way for 3-4 hours. Nose still didn't open up. On the palate it's complex and balanced. Very smooth, especially at this stage. Nice enjoyable finish, but not that long. Maybe like the previous note suggested, it has entered a stage of deep sleep. Don't drink it now.
This wine is clearly entering a deep sleep closing down all its splendor. Still very good but nothing compared to the first bottle I drank in Jan 2013.
Do yourself a favor, do not touch this for the next 8-10 years!
If you want to get a hint of how this will evolve - then you should purchase a bottle of Domaine Julienne Reserve 2000 and open it. The level of power, elegance and complexity will be comparable (not the taste) and you will, with a smile, look forward to the day when the Janasse VV has morphed into a transcendent experience :-)
This wine has it all--in spades! Decanted four hours. The color is very deep purple. Even after the long decant, the aromas emerge slowly with vigorous swirling. On display is the full panoply of primary scents—cherries, plums, violets, garrique, rosemary, licorice, sage, coffee and just the suggestion of animal. The flavors (again plums, cherries and coffee) are huge and deep and are balanced by cutting acidity and sweet tannins. This is some big stuff and the finish lasts a minute. Despite its size and weight the wine is neither heavy nor tiring. It remains lithe and lissome. Perfect, if that is possible. Wish I had ten cases just for myself.
