Perfect cork. Decanted for 1h. Deep garnet, dark cherry core, slight discolouration around the rim. On the nose, heavy barnyard, violets at first. After 2 more hours in decanter, aromas of coffee beans, beef blood, iron, casis with a hint of tomato leaf and green pepper. On the palate, resolved dusty tannins, higher acidity, deep flavours of casis, leather, cigar box, black pepper spice. A bit thin on the mid palate, lacking persistence. Finish medium+ A good wine from not so good vintage. Fully mature. At its peak. Drink now or hold another 2-3 years.
weekly tasting group; some Bordeaux (My place): Beautiful, complex and luxurious bouquet with cassis, cedar, tobacco, earth and autumn impressions as well as some pleasant barnyard. On the palate a firm amount of red fruits, some licorice and spiciness. Some bell pepper. Firm acidity and tannin with still a good bite. The wine is mature and disappoints a bit on the palate. Maybe another two years of cellaring will do good, but I am not sure. I have one more bottle tucked away for 2017, so there will be a final follow up.
One of my favorite wines since the 1982. This one had the same flavor profile which I love. Not as elegant as the 82 but maybe because of age. A lovely wine. I have yet to have a Gruaud Larose that I didn't like. This is not a fabulous vintage but it was still lovely-- after a 2 1/2 hour decant. Didn't taste it periodically so might have opened up earlier.

(Chateau Gruaud-Larose St Julien) A dark red-purple, glossy appearance. On the nose it has sweet, slightly confected blackcurrant and cherry fruit. The palate has bags of structure, with plenty of sweet, ripe, concentrated fruit. Massive tannins. Very backward. Needs seven to ten years.
