  • Last bottle. This has softened and matured phenomenally. A luscious confectionary raspberry note has arisen on the nose with the palate following, but balanced with the nicotine. A good showing and the cab seems to win out in the long run. But I think one has to drink up now. I thought of it as a 91 on day 1 and only an 88 on day 4.

  • A pleasant red blend with a light smoky taste lingering. The wine was aged in oak for about eight months and was delightful for just sipping or enjoying cheeses or food.

  • Note dated 5/31/2014: a nice comeback for this wine, rating up -> 90. The mentioned paradox seems to mainly stem from the numbing leather/tobacco/nicotine note, as a counterpoint to the cherry, around the tongue, especially the tip, which seems to be different from the tannins but contributes to the dryness just the same. This gives the wine a considerable complexity and demands full attention in small sips if you drink it by itself, otherwise this beauty might seem annoying just because it isn't easy drinking. It should help the taste if you use a broad Burgunder style glass for this wine. That also beautifully shows the fast leg patterns.

    Original Note dated 3/3/2014:
Except for the last two sentences, I agree with 3/23/2013 - HEBILL. Notice the comments from 2010 - 2013 on the 2001 vintage: they give reason to assume potential of the 2009 vintage -> 2018. Also let it breathe for an hour before drinking: it will transform tremendously. On day two it is better still.

Great nose of cedar wood, almost mocca like. And not stuffy at that like some others in that direction. Rusty tinge in the glass. High acidity initially put me off a bit, and it still seems to kill the dark cherry on the palate too soon (this part is better if you let it breathe for a while). It is, however, an obstinate beauty - the obstinate part relating to someone saying "not exactly fun to drink" and "punishing wine" - rich with seeming paradox. And that is probably why you see the ratings fluctuate to this extreme.

Not an everyday staple wine, but wonderful in intervals. And drink it with someone else because it can be difficult to finish the bottle alone. I will cherish my remaining bottle and hope to keep it until 2017/18 (*).

(*) Pious aspiration, but I doubt I will be able to keep my hands off it for that long.

OK.
