  • Heater week; 3/8/2024-3/17/2024 (Chicago, IL): Wow. I never figured I'd be so enthusiastic about drinking a bottle of Caymus, but damn do they not make 'em like they used to anymore. It's night and day the difference between this and the trash that is modern Caymus. Black Napa fruit in that sun-drenched way, with leather and wood shavings, this is truly the way God intended Napa cabernet to be. Hell, I'd be drinking heaps of this if they were still like this. Alas. A relic of an age gone, but what a truly golden age it was. Absolutely stunning, resolved, and delicious cabernet (and one of the best Napa cabs I've had in a while, MacDonald notwithstanding).

  • I'm cleaning out my oldies - some of them are good, some not. This one never came around while being periodically tested over four hours or so.

  • Clearly on the far side of the drinking window. Nose has hints of the complex mix more evident in past year. Now mainly cedar. The palate is dominated by a sour note that fortunately dissipates somewhat to show a still-tannic core with dark fruit tones. I decanted the bottle and drank the wine with a fine bison steak and broccoli rabe -- not sure if decanting helped or hurt. Overall, we enjoy these old bottles, this one included.

  • I pulled the cork on my last Caymus 85 cabernet and glad I did. Similarly to my previous note this is classic stuff which has become finally approachable and enjoyable after 35 years in bottle. Glad I kept it this for so long but wife it had softened 10 years ago but c'est la vie!

  • Many of the common attributes of a mature California Cab. Wood & leather, dust, tobacco on the nose. Medium body but seemingly denser than I would have thought. Bricking on the edges. Unfortunately some astringency / bitterness on the finish. Quick to breath, the wine started to decline after a couple hours of opening (no decanting).
