The last of a pair, this was magnificent. Everyone was shocked that the bottle almost expelled its cork from the internal pressure, even though the bottle had been chilled and handled gently. Persistent mousse combined with old Champagne flavors. A memory that will last a very long time.

Half bottle. Straight cork nonetheless a little hard to remove. Spritz in the glass. Mid gold colour. Fabulous, lush nose with lots of butter, mushroom, and a little fruit purée. No longer sparkling, but it has lively acidity, plum fruit and plum skin, and quite a savoury character. Some bitterness on the finish. It's not the best older champagne by any means, but it's holding up pretty well - larger formats should still be good. I've no experience with old half bottles, but this was too cheap to resist. Previously I'd only had VCP's '89 Cave Privée, which was naturally a bit better. At first I thought it had fallen apart after a short time, but the next day it was at least as good. [Cork + cage; 12% abv; Nickolls & Perks, £40/375ml].
