Community Tasting Notes (8) Median Score: 90 points

  • Aged Bordeaux Gems (with Unico/Heitz MV in the mix): Magnum. Upper mid shoulder level. This was a roller-coaster. The nose was amazing, to die for. So sexy, sweet, dense, yet fresh and with a sense of weightlessness. The palate, on the other hand, was hollow and rather simple. 97+ points for the nose, 90/91 points for the palate.

TN: Very sexy nose with lots of pure red fruit, strawberry candy, malt, honey and with a superb herbal lift from mint/Melissa. Intense, light, sweet and fresh. Delivered in HD. The palate is rather hollow with herbal notes and bright red fruit, not the complexity or precision of the nose. Good but slightly fragile structural frame.

Decanting: Double decanted only. Good enough.

  • Magnum rarities tasting (Near Basel): This was part of a rarity old wine tasting hosted by a merchant and collector. All (almost) bottles were from magnum and double-decanted. The line-ups was dominated by aged Bordeaux, but also included two vintages of Unico and one from Martha's Vineyard. The undisputed winners were Pichon Lalande 82 and Lynch Bages 82. The most memorable, however, was the Pontet Canet 29 and St Croix Dumonts 21. The Unico (60, 65) were underwhelming as was – once again for me – Mouton 82.

    Tasting note:
Double decanted, from magnum. This may sound a bit disgusting, but this was like finding an old strawberry bubble gum stuck under your chair and then chewing it - just to find it was still full of sweet, light, red berry fruit. There is also light, green, fresh herbal notes of Melissa (tons of it, in fact) and some vegetal notes. This is absolutely amazing, singular and just utterly unexpected. The palate unfortunately rather thin, but on the plus side in good balance. The nose easily 96-97+ and admittedly can‘t blame a 1929 wine for being a bit thin.

  • Richter magnum tasting, all wines out of Magnum: This wine has two sides. Beautiful nose of herbs, irish moos and some fruit but then in the palate this is harsh, stinging acidity and metallic. I would really recommend just smelling this wine!

  • Annual Richter Extravaganza (All bottles out of magnums) (Farnsburg): 95 point nose - 65 point palate. So on average you land somewhere near 80. Awesome nose reminding me of Martha’s with mint, medicinal, eucalyptus and candied sugar. But hard, edgy, sour and short in the palate

  • All prune and leather. From a Swedish cellar, and from a bottling that should be above average, but this bottle did not perform.
