Powerful black fruit aromas, a little stinky at times; maybe a bit of VA. Quite poised and belies its years with really great grippy tannins. Full of bright black fruits, it has a nice sweet and sour character, the texture is lovely and there is a lingering creamy tobacco character on the finish. It's a great bottle but just suffered in comparison to the amazing 64 alongside it.

Lopez de Heredia dinner at Troquet (Boston, MA): Surprisingly dark and youthful in colour for a 48 year old wine. Stunning nose showing roses, cherries, cranberries, leather, herbs and forestal underbrush notes. On the palate it's not quite as expressive, showing red fruits over some earthy and minty notes but a little light in intensity. Good acidity leads to a slightly thin finish.

The fill was high, cork extracted with the minimum of fuss with no crumbling and the wine as fresh as a daisy. A hint of V.A gives good aromatic lift and one’s nostrils are engulfed with wonderful whiffs of raspberries, tar, licorice, earth, leather and spice. It is beautifully round and even in the mouth with great proportion, complexity and elegance. It does gain weight in the glass and whilst there is a sensation of complete resolution it still has fine, minerally acidity on the finish.
