Last of 3 bought from Fine & Rare in 2003, opened 45 minutes, splash decanted, mid shoulder, soaked and worked cork - luminous darkish ruby, leggy, amber rim; very complex, enthralling bouquet with fine black fruit, spice and other tertiary flavours indicating less CF than in the preceding 66, classy; medium bodied, elegant and silky, vv long, persistent (2 minutes plus), concentrated and complex, a revelation and class in a glass, and WOTN, hard to see upside but no rush based on this bottle. VF+ (19).

This wine: Pretty rich. High acidity and the alcohol feels a little high too, which disturbs the balance a little. A good bottle but not more than that. Clearly right bank.

Cheval Blanc Vertical ‘Chez Elke’ (Hotel Hohenzollern, Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler): Oxidative, banana, licorice, not good on the nose, but the palate is still fairly good. I don’t think this was an off bottle, I’d rather guess this needs to be drunk up (or should have been 10 years ago)
