  • Odds and ends in Munich (Munich, Käfer's): Very lively nose of cassis, tobacco. Velvety palate, earth, wet leather. Simply phenomenal.

  • Amazing for it's age, could easily have passed for a 10-25 year old wine. Nose was energetic, coiled, still very primary with black fruits (prunes, black cherries) taking the lead. No real complexity. The palate showed incredible vigor, a big wine with lots of structure, smooth but acidity still lifting everything up. This one could go on for a while, really amazing given it's age but no real sense of excitement developping...

  • Smells like reduced soy sauce with lots of Unami and sticky tar and roses with sweet port like nuances. Amazing for it's age.

  • The Ultimate BBC (Burg, Bordeaux and Champagne) Dinner (Absinthe, Boat Quay): A real treat. This was an incredibly divisive wine though - half of us loved it, the other half hated it. Not unexpected perhaps, seeing how this seemed to have more in common with tasting notes on the fabled 1947 that one comes across every now and then, than with a younger, more modernly styled Cheval Blanc. The nose here was every bit as port-like many tasters have described the '47 to be, with deep aromas of dried figs and plums, earth and mushrooms, and nice shades of sweet milk chocolate, dried flowers and sweet Christmas spices. I thought this was really something else. It was delicious on the palate too. Again there were port-like shades, with luscious flavours of figs and sour plums, ripe berries and raisins, more spice and a bit of smoke, all still beautifully balanced by lively acidity and supported by fine tannins. There was really quite profound depth and a sweet richness on this, yet the stunningly youthful structure kept it pure and transparent in a manner that one only finds in truly top-notch Bordeaux. It had wonderful finish to boot, with a touch of molasses and a ring of undergrowth and truffle - almost Burgundian here in the way it glided lithely through the back-palate. A great experience and, to me at least, a great wine.
