Pretty wow and much better than a prior bottle 2 years ago. Decanted for at least 90 minutes by the time we tried it and it had opened up nicely. Hard to explain but appeared both youthful (dense, dark fruit, still tannic) and older (some secondary characteristics but not mushroom, etc) at the same time. Don’t think it will get better but feels like it will stay at this plateau for a bit. Wish I had another bottle.

It‘s six years, since I last tasted a bottle of this wine, there are some clear observations: Firstly, the 2005s clearly evolve at a glacial speed. I wonder whether we will see the day when we can call Alan Meadows out on his view of 2005 as vintage of the century being a giant error. Well, he may not live to see that day. The day we come to a conclusion on this question may be well into my retirement (and I’m in my early forties)… Anyway, this wine has still a colour that is only slightly evolved and so is the nose. The nose is intriguing, though it takes time to open up: crushed red fruit, wet stones, herbes de provences, a touch of black tea. Secondly, the word that most comes to my mind is ‚dense‘. Dense tannins, dense aromatics that need time to open up, dense, chewy tannins (at 17 years of age, n.b. we’re talking about Monthelie!) -did I mention dense tannins? Well, you get the idea. Overall, this was good, interesting, but not a charmer. Still wondering what happened to these 2005s? If this is the state of a Monthelie, when can we even think about opening any of the Côte de Nuits 1er Crus…?

Popped and poured out a glass one hour before consuming and consumed over the next two hours. Gorgeous burgundy high toned fruit perfume. The palate had dark berry fruit and some crunchy stony elements. This wasn't shut down or overly tannic as other '05s can be but did feel a bit rustic on the palate. Perhaps it will smooth out over time but I think it's just a slightly rustic wine based on its geography. Drink now or over the next ten years.

Medium deep garnet red with raspberry rim. Intense nose of fresh red and blue fruit (raspberry, blueberry), black tea and a hint of earth. In the mouth medium bodied, fresh acidity, still firm, but finely grained tannins. Remarkable length. Overall fresh, energetic, a bit rustic, but intense. I thought I'd give one of the 2005ers from the Côte de Beaune a try, but this one seems still young.

Fin mørk frukt med krydder og litt treverk. Fortsatt i sin ungdom med litt grove tanniner. God konsentrasjon og lengde. La ligge.
