Surprisingly good: complex, flavorful, dense in texture, spicy, and a nice lingering taste at the end.
My wife, our daughter, a good family friend, and I drank this wine in a blind two-wine tasting. The other wine was a 1997 Chateau Grand-Puy-Lacoste Pauillac. My wife and I are big fans of Super Tuscany wines and Cabernet Sauvignon. We like the Lacoste-Borie Pauillac; we like it a lot.
Initially, my wife preferred the Chateau Grand-Puy; I liked the Lacoste Borie right away, as did my daughter and our family friend. Over time, we all agreed on the Lacoste Borie.
Before drinking, we decanted both wines for over four hours. The Lacoste-Borie has a heavy fragrance--earthy, deep, and aromatic. The color is dark and dense, leading one to believe the wine has volume and depth--a good conclusion, by the way.
Bottom Line: While my wife and I still prefer Super Tuscany wines, the 1996 Lacoste-Borie Pauillac was a quite good. Would we purchase it again? Yes, definitely. The wine opened and improved over time. Don't pop this wine open and expect a wonderful taste. This wine is already over twenty years old. Certainly we can wait a few hours after opening and decanting before drinking and enjoying the wine.

If you are a connoisseur of weird and unusual aromas, seek this wine out. The nose is nearly obscene. Very animal. Very medicinal. This might have gone beyond tertiary and then some. Impressive liveliness and structure for a second wine, but this wine is all about the aromas, the very strange aromas.

50 minute decant. Exotically spiced aromas and flavours. Gentle. Old. Nicely balanced. Good solid structure. Good concentration of flavour. Nothing amazing. Holds up very well on Day 2.

Wow! Bought yesterday from wine merchant, in great condition. What a feast! Reminded me of a Mouton 1985 light. Red fruit, exotic, slighty drying. A bit thin in taste , but a great mature pauillac.
