10th MW Symposium, Wiesbaden - Day 4: Alcohol 11.7%, 0.58 g/l residual sugar, 7.42 g/l acidity, 3.48 pH Vineyard Monte Bello Vineyard Maturation Oak influence: Barrels: 100% new air-dried oak; 95% American oak, 5% French oak. Aging: Seventeen months in barrel.

Sampled from magnum bottle, there was a huge bottle variation around the room Fully developed, coffee, mocca notes, overripe dried currants, raisin, plums, cinnamon notes, whole spice, decadent, syrup, roasted malt, chestnut honey. Palate showing light body, dried fruit, warmth, showing some tannins, raisins, prunes, dates, finish is short. It feels over the top and far away if you are into fruit. Decadent with all the boxes ticked if you are into older wines.

This showed beautifully with flavors of smoky cassis and deep earthy spices along with notes of eucalyptus and grilled nuts. Very silky and fine with just a hint of unripe green. Superb wine from a forgotten vintage.

(Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello) Bricking medium ruby color with 4 millimeter clear meniscus; nice mature, mushroom, cedar, cassis nose; tasty, mature, poised, tart cassis, cedar, tart currant palate; should go another 8 to 10 years; medium-plus finish 93+ points (97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot)
(Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon Monte Bello) The following tastes came from four different bottles, all from the same case. The first three bottles had been decanted for 90 minutes; the 4th was just opened and splash decanted:
Bottle 1 – lighter crimson color with orange-yellow edges; beautiful, sexy, mature nose of dried cherry, raisin and leather; dried cherry on the palate with sweet tannins and good grip; medium-plus finish 93+ pts. (97% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Merlot) (11.7% alcohol)
Bottle 2 - better color than the first bottle; lovely, mature Bordeaux nose, like a classic Pichon Lalande, but with a touch of TCA; a little richer on the palate than bottle 1, with more cassis and less dried cherry; medium-plus finish 93 pts.
Bottle 3 - same color as 2nd bottle; dried cherry, leather and mushroom nose; most youthful of the 3 bottles on the palate, very balanced with dried cassis and cherry fruit; medium-plus finish 94 pts.
Bottle 4 (just opened) - more even light crimson color with a little cloudiness; lovely mature dried cherry and leather nose; tannic entry, focused palate dominated by sweet tannins and dried cherry; medium finish 93 pts.

Very accessible classic napa with cinnamon, softened sweet currant, menthol and earth. Palate was sweet with softened tannins. At its peak.
