Cork was fused shut so ending upp making a mess opening the bottle leading to a double decant through sieves. Almost no aromas from the glass and slightly funky/dusty at first sip.
Just a few minutes later the funk aired out and replaced by notes of figs/dates, freshly ground coffee, leather and sweet tobacco. I can also detect a light touch of raspberry and liqourice and potentially some grilled red peppers.
Fully mature and potentially starting to fade ever so slightly but in a very good place now. For sure in a tertiary state with fruit on the dryer side but a very civilized and proper wine. Glass: Riedel Veritas Merlot

Paleo with a blend of CS (85%), CF (5%) and Sangiovese (10%), which changed as of 2001, as of this year Paleo consists of 100 % CF. Dadel, fig, raisin, bramble, mature cherry, tobacco leaf, soft espresso, full body, at peak, long dried black fruit finish.

Earth, leather, tobacco, pepper, wet stones, smoked roasted meats, dark stewed cherries and blackberries on the nose. Complex, reminiscent of aged, quality bdx. Full bodied, well balanced but intense sour cherries, leather, tobacco. Tannins almost fully resolve - the last remnants clinging on stubbornly. A well built wine with robust structure. The finish lingers for ages. Very, very good, but likely at its peak, or even a few years over.
I've had younger Paleos, most of them after Le Macchiole moved to 100% cab franc in 2001. Quality wise, this is as good as any of the other I've tried, but I must admit there's something quite sublime about the single varietal bottling and the way that expresses in the glass. Nonetheless - this was very a compelling offering from a producer that I really like.

cuvee with 85% cab sauvignon, 5 cab franc and 10% sangiovese,
18-20 months in barriques
was in a good shape for its 27 years in the bottle,
a lot of sous-bois, licorice, cinnamon, fruit almost gone but sill enjoyable.

nose of earth and leather shoes. palate has old school dusty cherries. This bottle is on its downturn, but still has plenty of life for enjoyment.
