Pre-Tinariwen @ Sam's (Casa Vinz): becoming ruby in color. thin rim??? smells of scratching red bricks. do i detect the smell of sun shining after the rain? still holding on to tonnes of fruit. deep and mysterious fruit profile. plum, raisin, blackberry and some molasses. seriously, the tannin seems to be integrating, but really not all the way there. dare i say, if this is it's expression at 20 years old, this wine has 7 to 9, maybe 10 more years in her. maybe some one out there is putting out counterfeit bottles of 1989 raymond. i wish there were a way that i could revisit this wine out of the party context. note to self, buy old raymond for some reason.

Ridiculous that a basic Napa Cab at 20 years can be so alive. It was bright red with a wide rim (the only visible sign of age). Began with dark berry scents and over time bright notes of red fruit emerged. There was a savory dried herbal quality as well. Reminiscent of aged Bordeaux but had its own character. Initially, the tannins were slick and shy, but as we drank they came on as fine-grained, pleasantly chewy and well integrated. Towards the end of the bottle (when else?) it really shone - full, rich and expressive but light on the palate. Really enjoyable and an intellectual trip.

Nice bottle of wine once the funk blew off and it opened up (about 15 minutes).
