One of the joys of a large wine cellar is finding a mediocre wine 12 years past it due date to take upstairs to the Mrs. for spaghetti sauce, finding out that only that it is not bad, but it is spectacular. Nose of dark fruit, complex fruit (not jammy) and a little savory on the palate, and medium finish. Plenty of intergrating tannins. Extremely balanced and just frigging delicious. Plenty of power left. Think I’ll serve it with appetizers at dinner party tomorrow and put the Quilceda Creek in the bullpen.

A highly enjoyable wine that has aged very well. Opaque black to the edge with an aromatic mix of violets, smoked meat, blackberry, and boysenberry. Very supple texture with just enough acidity and tannin to be refreshing and lifted. The swallow fills the mouth with fruit and very languidly flows away. Probably near its peak but has no need to be drunk soon. Went surprisingly well with a wide range of food including lamb, roasted potatoes, beets, and garden salad.
