Brown red. Fig, potipurri, Lavender on nose. Quite profound and complex. On the palate dried strawberry, dried cherry and blackcurrant. Mature forest floor, earthiness and asphalt tar complementing the smoke meat and peppery notes and touch of soy sauce on the finish. A bit lighter than others but a very serious La Mouline - certainly not an "off vintage"!!

During a lovely Cote Rotie dinner. Lovely wine, distinctly fine nose of lavender, honey and pepper. Fully mature and drinking great now, no reason to hold as this is more on the decline than incline. The kind of bottle you just want to sniff and sip in isolation on an autumn day in front of a chimney.

HDH auction at Spiaggia; 6/22/2018-6/23/2018 (Chicago, IL): I love the light touch here -- maybe it wasn't initially a light touch but it certainly has become that. There's a really lovely earthiness here, with lots of really lovely salinity. A hint of olives as well here. It's an immensely spicy wine, showing tons of acidity, if a bit light (especially next to the 1994).

Guigal LaLa Dinner II (Chef's Club NYC): This nose is the quietest of the ‘87 flight. The earthy tones are subdued behind purple currant fruit that seems to be advancing at a faster pace than the others. Could be a faint flicker of TCA in this, maybe some sort of woody VA, but even if not, this is a little clunky relative to the beautiful expression of the ‘87 Landonne and Turque alongside. On the palate this fruit is more advanced than the other two, and suggests that this is either mildly damaged or perhaps just coming unglued, but this seems unlikely given the stellar performance of the Turque and Landonne. Getting a bunch of different reads off of this as it seems to change with the wind, good smoke and soil coming through now. I mentioned to the highly knowledgable sommelier for the event that this wine might be corked, and she agreed...
