  • Brought instant tears to my eyes. Speechless. This is true greatness. It's also a legendary vintage - and the proof is right here, 54 years later. Pure spice - a light smattering of clove, and cinnamon very clearly. Figs, carob and a dusting of cocoa. Beautiful sweetness, incredibly purity and acidity, no cloudiness or faults of any kind, impeccable class, definition and poise. Sensational - a dazzling symbiosis of opposites: classical and modern, powerful and delicate, modest and lofty, humble and haughty. Utterly convincing. Genius.

  • Holy Moses! What a wine! What a way to end a memorable night at Eleven Madison. After the 1995 Chateau Margaux and 1995 Lafite, it was time to change pace and the sommelier recommended this from the list of LdH bottles on the list. 47 years young! A nose of cranberries and red beets that jumped out of the glass and was simply exuberant. Bright cranberry color (at least in the somewhat dark restaurant). Medium bodied - this screamed of a burgundy based on the texture and I would have never guessed Spain blind. Heck - I would have thought this is 10 years old. Bright red fruits, electric acidity and a long long finish. This brought the wows out of the non-wine aficionados, who declared it wine of the night and said they have never thought wine could be this inspiring. I couldn't agree more. Memorable. I thought it could have more mid-palate complexity, but I am nit-picking here.

The non 78 in a superb flight of 78s.
WOTN and what an experience. Beautiful wine which has matured into something special. Fine elegant with a nice nose and great complexity. Such a great joy!
