Bob's cellar. Deep dark red, no bricking evident. Brooding nose of damsons, black cherries, cassis, liquorice, chocolate, all powerful and full. The vitality is amazing. Tasting opens with similar flavours, incredible fullness, a powerful wine but beautifully poised, black fruit, black chocolate and liquorice, cassis, smoky tumbleweed blowing by. The youth of this wine is still there, tempered with age. Fantastic. This was drunk on day 1, but day 2 much better. Really cool wine, absolute Aussie banger.

Four decades of Penfolds Grange (Chicago, IL): This reminds me a little of the 1998, and to me seems like what the younger wine will evolve into. Drinks like a 1990 Latour, really, with that intensity of fruit, large-scale structure, and silky tannins. Nowhere close to maturity, but incredibly enjoyable now for the balance between all of those elements. Darker in complexion than the similarly stunning 1989 (and in fact, the 1990-1988 trilogy is pretty much a bijection onto the 1998-1996 trilogy).

Marvellous. Decanted half an hour ahead. Paired with shepherd’s pie—sublime match.
