  • 4th of 24, decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, youthful robe, exquisite, complex and detailed nose, similarly fine nuanced palate as it approaches maturity, still on fruit with muted but fine grained tannins, elegant and beautifully balanced, if without authority and drive of very best vintages, upside yet, 20+ years. VF (18.5).

  • A beautiful Lafite from the under-appreciated and overshadowed 2001 vintage.

  • One of the best noses and palate I have ever experienced in my 40 years of formal tastings. This will take a few hours for me to do my sommelier write up-please wait….

  • Tasted at Verve Wine Lafite tasting.

Still dark in the glass, but the purple tint is gone.

Age is immediately apparent on the nose. Still pleasant, but tertiary notes clearly poking through. Old, but elegant. Seems to be just beginning its decline. Light green pepper on the nose. Body is quite light. 85% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot.

After some time in the glass, a lovely sweet, smoky barbecue flavor develops (maybe hoisin sauce)

Lightness and increasing tertiary notes suggest this is not one for the ultra-long term. Nonetheless, clearly a high quality wine with elegance and complexity.

  • Half bottle. Into the neck fill and great cork. This was the best Bordeaux I’ve had in a while vs 2000/2003 Latour, 2003 Lafite, 2000/2003 Margaux, and 2003 Haut Brion (second place). I think 2001 is the better vintage because it has the flamboyance of 2003 but the freshness and complexity of 2000.

This wine was a shower, not grower. It was aromatic immediately and never quit. The nose was classic aged Pauillac, with cassis, oak, cigar, and underbrush. It had some mineral aspect as well. I felt this wine was much more like other Pauillac than I usually feel Lafite is. Typically, Lafite is more fruit over oak/cigar but this bottle was the other way, closer to Mouton style.

The palate showed good youthful strength with an initial burst of blackberry and cassis, with the tobacco element and oak coming through later. It carried the hallmark perfect balance and effortless drinkability of Lafite. It’s elegance and transparency allowed it to pair with everything from caviar to spare ribs, and it tasted just great on its own too! 🍷

I think it’s time to drink this wine, certainly from half bottle.
