Decanted for about a couple hours. Needs about 3-4 at least in the decanter to really come alive. For a weaker vintage of this wine it's really still quite enjoyable despite being pretty tight. Will hold next bottle for several more years.

The 2008 Cos d'Estournel isn't exactly in a welcoming place at the moment, requiring 3 hours to really start coming out of its shell. Boysenberry and black plum dominate the nose with subtle lavender potpourri and sea salt elements - appealing enough in its constituent parts, though it hasn't quite eaten its oak and comes across as a tad heavy-handed. Though there's plenty of body, the palate remains a little stern and the alcohol intermittently pokes through; this is a wine that wants to stay in the cellar a bit longer. 12 hours really does help the cohesion of the palate and the depth of flavor is impressive. There's potential for the future, even though it's clear this isn't one of the great vintages for Cos.

Tasted blind. This wine emerged as one of the tasting's positive surprises, challenging the year's expectations with its impressive substance, a complex array of aromas, and clear definition. Typically, the house style of Cos d'Estournel tends to lean towards intensity and opulence, which can sometimes overwhelm. However, in this cooler vintage, such characteristics found a harmonious balance.
TN: Herbal, spicy and some vegetal aromas on the nose. Not enough fruit to be truly balance. On the palate, however, there was a stronger fruit core, mostly with dark fruit, complemented by spices, herbs, smoky notes, as well as minerality. Fine tannins, good freshness and all well-balanced. Would be 95-ish, if it wouldn’t be for the slightly muted nose.
Decanting: Not decanted, no extensive decanting necessary.

Tasted blind. Given the vintage a surprisingly extracted and ripe fruit. Elements of Maggi herbs as well as green fresh herbs and green bell pepper. Smoke and ash mineral notes. Top notes of violets. Layered and multi-facetted. A leathery palate, round with soft tannin. Otherwise fresh with density, a decent length finish and presence. This 2008 doesn’t have to hide from its 2009 counterpart in any way!
