(Tenuta di Biserno Coronato, Bolgheri, Tuscany) Yes, this is a value red, considering the cost differential between the Coronato and more established, vaunted super-Tuscans of no greater quality, selling for three times more. 2005 is the inaugural vintage of this new project from the brothers Lodovico and Piero Antinori. Their 3-year-old vines have yielded a wine of gorgeous concentration and proportion: violet and blackcurrant perfumes emanating from a subtle, herbal-smoky-tobacco core; thick, plush, flowing sensations punctuated by zesty acidity (in this sense, very Italian); and muscular yet fine, meticulously sculpted tannins. For all that, it’s an eminently approachable, Cabernet Sauvignon-based super-Tuscan (with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot) that no red wine-loving guest should have a problem identifying with. Still kicking. Black fruits, eucalyptus, sage, mint, green bell pepper. Tannins medium but very well integrated and rolling. Some stewed fruit (overly tertiary) and was best straight after popping the cork, indicating this probably peaked 2-4 years ago. Drink now but still worth your while.

In a fun place. Strong savory notes - tar, pine, tobacco, plums, umami. Drink them soon, and enjoy.

Low pitched nose of blackberries. Moderately rich mouth feel is a bit more elegant than I was expecting. Finish has some decent acidity, but also a touch of heat. Overall, could easily be mistaken for a Napa Cab, except that the tannins are a bit more drying and, although the oak is noticeable, is less so than for a Napa at this price point. Still, on balance, would probably do better with a mid tier Napa from a good vintage.

A bit hot on the PnP (14%). Black cherry, black coffee. A touch of artichoke, if you look for it. A dusty minerality that some will like more than I. Drink now.
