  • Classic Guigal. Dark red fading to brick in the glass. Nose is bacon grease, bloody game, and strawberries with faint hints of eucalyptus.

This was popped and poured and it put on decent weight in no time. Taste was more of the same. A bbq in a glass.

  • Popped and poured, drinking for 6 hours.
Medium garnet with brick edge. The nose has flowers, coffee, meaty/gamey notes, black berries, musk, and a hint of sweet orange. Medium to medium-plus body with medium acidity, silky tannin, and integrated oak. The finish is rich and long. The only thing lacking is complexity, but who can ask for more in a 2007 vintage?

  • Drank. Most feminine/tasty of the trio, but would be much better with more age/development.

  • Popped and poured my second (and unfortunately last) bottle of this wine. Much better than my previous bottle, as this has all the characteristics I tend to associate with these "La Las." Gorgeous appearance, black-ruby with one hell of a lot of viscosity apparent on the bowl of the glass. On the nose, has what I was hoping/expecting to smell: bacon fat, smoke, and meat/game scents. The definition of animalistic. I absolutely will save some of this for tomorrow because it seems sure to reach even greater heights with more air time. All of these things show up in the mouth as well. Wow! This is drinking well but it still is fairly primary, with decades of life ahead, surely. Now THIS is what I thought I would get out of a bottle of this wine. Very few Rhone wines approach these heights. 5-14-17-10: 96/100.

Next day, 20 hours later: This has gotten even more impressive, with more meat, smoke, bacon fat, game in both nose and mouth, but it has also gotten silkier somehow; glassine. For that reason, I have adjusted my score, because I think this wine is surreal. It is miles better than the bottle I had earlier this year. What a treat! 5-14-18-10: 97/100.

  • Popped and poured. This got better as it sat in the glass. Still, slightly disappointing as it falls a bit short of both others' experiences and my own expectations given this wine's stellar reputation. Strong opaque black-red with glorious legs. Nose more floral than I would have expected, with only hints of the anticipated meaty, smoky, bacon fat I was hoping for. Nice and rich in the mouth, but again too primary for a 17 year-old Cote-Rotie. Going to leave this in the glass overnight to what transpires.

Revisiting this the next day, I can't say it has really improved alot. There's loads of dark fruit, but little in the way of meaty, smoky or bacon fat like I expected and hoped for. The nose on this is more chocolate/cocoa/shoe polish/briar. Disappointing, to say the least, as this is supposed to be right in the middle of its drinking window, and was purchased from a shop with a provenance guarantee. 5-11-15-7: 88/100.
