  • Too tame. Was ok with food.

  • A little thin on the midpalate. Paled in comparison to a '02 Penfolds 389 and did not stand up as well to the sirloin that accompanied it. Some tobacco and black raspberry notes. Medium-length finish with lots of acidity.

  • I bought a 6pk of this on release and have had bad luck with this wine over the years--a couple of corked bottles, a couple that were devoid of fruit and probably corked, and one stewed. But this, my last bottle showed very well indeed. Decanted 2 hours and tasted over the next hour or so, the nose featured smoky black fruit with plenty of savory and high-toned aromatic elements. On the palate this starts off rich and savory but then a sinew-y streak of bright red fruit kicks in to bring it all into focus. Long, tall and rock solid on the finish, at least the last bottle showed its stuff. Now through 2014.

  • If you like mature wines and this has been cellared properly, it is terrific now. Red fruit on nose, bramble on palate, very balanced. I do not think this will improve at all, so drink up. A really great bottle of wine.

  • I have been wanting to drink this for some time now. My mother-in-law was visiting from KCMO, so I thought it was a good time to open this up. We had this with a slow-cooked pork roast and root vegetables.

Sat upright for about an hour. No decanting; just pop and pour. Very little sediment.

The color has not lost anything, it was a beautiful medium to dark cherry color. The nose is a combination of allspice, red berries and a little bit of tar. This wine had nice legs. Well integrated tannins, just oh so slightly grainy. Medium to light on the mouthfeel. Notes of pencil lead, red raspberries and maybe a little bit of hazelnut. The finish is long, with a nice lingering note of sour cherries.

I was also prompted to open this after tasting the 2008 vintage (which was lovely) at a wine and food pairing dinner, this past Wednesday, that focused on Spanish food and wine. The Termes was the highlight of the night, served with medallions of lamb loin in a brown sauce, along with risotto.

This was a wonderful wine. Even my wife, who does not typically enjoy red wines, gave it a "thumbs up". I'd say this has several more years left in it, if stored well. Enjoy!!!
