Wine Dinner at Fond, Philadelphia, PA (Fond, Philadelphia, PA): Tasted non blind at a wine dinner. Opened and glass decanted briefly before serving. Followed over about two hours. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of leather, roasted meat, plums and berries. Flavors of currants, plums, berries and cherries. Medium acidity, medium tannins, medium body. Drink now. 91-?

Nose opens with a barnyard stink which blows off with air to reveal red currants, tobacco, modest toast and spices. On the palate, medium bodied with great balance of fresh acidity and medium-rich fruit. Tannins are gritty, but not unapproachable. Each glass shows better as it opens up and becomes more tightly knit. Nice finish. A good Bordeaux blend that is very Italian in character.

Immediately out of bottle, had odd, metallic and slightly bitter finish. This disappeared after 45 minutes in decanter. Nicely balanced with hints of cherry, forest floor, chocolate. Nice integration of acidity with medium tannins. I enjoyed this very much after decanting. Went out and bought a few more.

Tasted November 11, 2006 at a retail tasting. Opened and served in a Reidel Restaurant Magnum glass. Dark garnet color in the glass, clear hue throughout. Nose of black licorice, some coffee notes and black cherries. Flavors of black cherries, a touch of mocha, some red plums and just a tad of bitters on the finish. Medium acidity, tannins and body. Well balanced overall. I’d recommend holding this wine a couple of years before trying again. Seems youthful but built to last a while. This was my number one wine of the flight. Bought two bottles for the cellar and probably should have bought a few more. Recommended.
