The 1978 Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau is showing beautifully, offering up aromas of ripe plums, licorice, grilled meats, loamy soil, fennel seed and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's fully mature, with melting tannins, lively acids and a fleshy, enveloping core of fruit. Long and sapid, it's easy to see why many consider this the reference-point wine from this estate.

Oh my! An absolutely brilliant showing from a 42 year old Chateauneuf. Still dark and vibrant and a beautiful match for a friend's homemade cassoulet. Clearly wine of the night and outshone a'98 in magnum.

Was excited to try this to compare with other Rhone 78s. Unfortunately this bottle was gone - despite perfect storage since release a sunken cork and it was undrinkable.

A gift from an old friend, shared at a party with friends - several had had this wine before. Impressive though somewhat faded. Still showed good fruit (blackberry, plum), leather, forest floor and garrigue. With the current trend towards blockbuster, overblown, overripe fruit, it was wonderful to rediscover the subtlety and elegance of these older wines.

Very delicate and elegant wine. Opened up nicely and became more expressive after 15-20 minutes in the glass. Still very much alive and juicy.
