E&R's Prequal to 25: Nebbiolo: Rather quiet on the not very distinctive nose... sometimes these modernist wines from the 90s are either all extracted or rotten and pruney, and this is neither... which is a great sign. The palate is certainly round and soft, but has nicely integrated acidity with primarily bright red fruits and tannins coming in on the end. A bit more bitter woody tannins show up on the finish, where it is feeling a bit more dried up and the oak shows itself more at the end. These feel like bitter wood tannins, not fruit tannins. Still, this was FAR better than I expected for a mid-90s modernist wine.

Prelude 25-an E&R Nebbiolo joint (E&R Wines, Portland OR): It's been a long time since I've had this wine. Mid-90s Scavino isn't really what I seek out, but I am more than happy to taste this. Unfortunately for it, it followed a 99 Monfortino but 'dems de breaks. It does show off the strongly modern style of the time with noteable oak still present along with cinnamon sticks, red cherries, sour red fruits, spice notes, crushed rocks, licorice, a touch of peppery tones, raspberries, and some violets. The Full bodied feel is balanced and mature with crisp and integrated, high acidity as well as slightly drying, high tannins. The tannins have pulled back a fair bit, but they just aren't balanced in the way I would like them from a 96. Still, it's great to revisit this after a while and I'm glad it was poured.

E&R Prequel 25 - Mostly older nebbiolo (Portland, OR): This showed licorice and black fruit on the nose. The palate wasn't terrible but very black fried and extracted, like gritty black raisin. The astringence became more pronounced with air -- or perhaps it was my palate saturating with tannins from all these Barolo. This was meh for me, one of my least favorites among the unflawed wines.

This was great!! Our last bottle. it entered the right window. So much power: it started with a 93 and endet with a 94-95. Give the wine a bit time to breath and it will opene up much more and comes back to live. Do not decand, just give it time to breath in your glass. This is a great and big wine that makes his master Paolo Scavino all honor! The best combined of two worlds.
