quite the pleasant surprise. 30 minutes of non decanted air/ time in the glass really helped this wine shed some initial brightness, and a clumsy earth profile, allowing the red fruit to soften from cherry to berry, and pick up some nice complexity.
Opened for 1st Anniversary Dinner at The Basin in Saratoga. Surprisingly lively for a 98 Cali Pinot -- and in better shape than the bottle we consumed last year. Reddish fruits cloaked in a bit of vanilla, which signifies (to me) that this wine saw some serious new oak. It wasn't too obtrusive, but noticable. Medium-bodied, elegant and silky on the palate. If you have 'em, it's time to drink them up.
Bright disc. Medium ruby robe with red rim. Clean, moderately intense nose showing cherry, "bramble," spiced apple, plum and dried herbs. Very well-balanced, medium-bodied and showing similar flavors as for the nose, with the addition of black tea. Ample but very well-integrated tannins. Medium-to-long, smooth finish. My impression has somewhat changed with respect to this wine, in the sense that it appears to have the structure to further improve and then hold for a longer period of time than what I have previously thought.
Medium ruby with brick/red rim. Clean, moderately intense nose showing ripe plum, cherry and spiced crabapple. Medium-bodied on the palate, well-balanced, with similar flavors as nose. Medium, smooth finish.
