Quite a different experience than the other Viader proprietary reds I have been fortunate enough to drink to date. Used a venturi and some elements remained well hidden through the first small pours. After about an hour it revealed very firm structure, a nose that was like a domestic right-bank style meritage (even sans merlot - the cab frank was tougher to find than other vintages, too). Plenty of spice and dark fruit supported by firm tannins. Not the supple and luxurious experience of drinking the '01 recently or the '99 or '98 in their prime, but the 2003's best may be yet to come. Perhaps it is in that mysterious awkward stage? I have 3 more bottles and will probably wait a full year (plus) before opening the next one. Did not meaningfully fade over 2+ hours (all with venturi).
Beautiful bouquet with some pleasant rustic flavors and beautifully ripe dark forest fruits. Same on the palate, some chocolate and sweet licorice, beautiful balance between a firm dose of sweetness and beautiful acidity. Powdery tannin. A bit heat in the finish, but overall a beautiful wine which is completely ready now and the next few years.
Still a big wine and going strong. Perfect with steak. Tannins are still firm and some heat on the finish. But the palate is full of dark fruit, leather and graphite. Could certainly go longer. Drink now-2017.
