Badly corked, which is a shame as there was plenty of sweet red fruit underneath. The fourth of six bottles I bought — two were badly VA marred, one was delicious and now this. Talk about bottle variability…

Wanted to share this with someone that I visited the domaine with, as she loved the 2019 which was very appealing with fresh red fruit, so got my hands on an aged bottle from a supposedly good vintage. Unfortunately this was quite plummy and monolithic, and the wine was not completely clean. The freshness had all but disappeared leaving behind a fruit salad that didn't come together.

2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany): Popped and poured. Deep garnet color. Clean, fine and structured nose. On the palate quite elegant, besides the 14,5% abv. Lots of red and dark fruit, good depth and texture. Salty mineral core, good length. Quartz is always a good buy. 93-94

A stellar bottle in prime form, and a relief as a prior bottle was marred badly by VA. This one was clean and fresh, with loads of concentrated red fruit along with some roasted herbs, smoke and leather.

Vinetasters: 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape et al. (Skokie, IL): Served double blind. Muted nose, dirtier with some dark plummy fruit. Tobacco and pyrazines on the palate. Some TCA though? My 6th, group's 6th.
